Who You Gonna Call?: 1/30/15

Talk about a 3rd Ghostbusters has been floating around for a long time. It wasn't until a few weeks ago that writer Paul Feig said he had a plan to make GB3 a reality. But, this time around we may not be following the adventures of a Dr. Peter, but a Dr. Patricia.

The actresses asked to be in the film (so far) are Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.

McCarthy has been in many films like Bridesmaids and The Heat. Both of these films have pretty good reviews and maintain a rating of"fresh"  on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

(from left to right) Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones,
 Kate McKinnon, and Melissa McCarthy.
Wiig also appeared in Bridesmaids, but she is better known for being a regular on SNL (at least since 2005).

McKinnon is another SNL lady. She was also the first openly gay woman to join the cast of SNL and is most famous for portraying Justin Bieber on the show.

Jones is a bit new on the comedy scene. She has been in a few movies and SNL skits, but that's it. Don't get me wrong, she'll definitely give her other possible co-stars a run for their money.

In summary, all of these ladies are very talented comedians and should bring a lot of funny to the film. It is definitely a film to look forward to. There is no approximate release date yet, but that doesn't matter. Fans young and old will want a front row seat to Ghostbusters 3, no matter who the stars are.

Selma? More Like Sell Everything I Have To Get This Movie More Oscar Nominations; 1/23/15

Selma deserved better. No questions asked. With only two Oscar nominations, one for best picture and one for best song, it deserved so much better.

Selma is an brutally accurate retelling of the events which happened in Selma, Alabama during the late 60s.  The movie mostly follows Dr. Martin Luther King and his friends but it's main focus is Civil Rights as a whole.

This movie was absolutely brutal. When I say brutal, i don't mean epic shoot-outs or fantastic fights. Brutal as in people being continuously battered with spiked clubs, slurs being spat in every direction, and some of the most fantastic dialog I have ever heard in a movie. Should have gotten best screenplay nominations too.

Oprah as Annie Lee Cooper
Any dialog from the movie was just so full of emotion. Happiness, love, hatred, and grief could all be felt in a single scene. It's hard to truly recreate all of the emotions that people went through during that time. All of the actors did a fantastic job. Oprah definitely should have gotten nominated for her supporting role.

I'm ecstatic that Selma got the nominations it did. I do hope it wins at least one of the categories. I'm just very disappointed it did not get the chance to receive even more recognition.

This is "Maybe" Not Annie's Year: 1/9/15

Official Movie Poster for
Annie (2014)
Over the course of many years, there have been many remakes of classic movies. Some are modernized, some stay in a set time period; some are heavily changed and some aren't. No matter what, there are always going to be people disappointed by the remakes claiming the classic was better and deeming the remake unesscessary.

The 2014 remake of Annie seems to falls into that category, most critics agree that it is quite a disappointment.

Richard Corliss of TIME Magazine calls it "A teetor-totter between O.K. and Meh." while Mary Houlihan of the Chicago Sun Times remarks "Even Sandy the dog looks like he's had enough."

It seems that not even the movie's big star power (Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx) could pull the whole thing together.
Lead actress Quvenzhané Wallis
"Did I really just watch Foxx do an entire musical number set inside a moving helicopter? I did, and I've never felt more embarrassed..." (Wesley Morris, Grantland)

Despite all the negativity, Annie has made over $74.5M since it's December release. For having a $65M budget (and still going strong in theaters), that's not half bad.

The movie's starring actress, Quvenzhané Wallis, has also been nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy or Musical Motion Picture (Golden Globes), Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture (NAACP Image Awards), and Best Young Actor/Actress (Broadcast Film Critics' Association Awards).
